The death toll from the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Sagaing, Myanmar, on March 28, 2025, has climbed to 694 fatalities in Myanmar alone, with 10 additional deaths reported in Bangkok, Thailand. Over 1,600 people have been injured, and many remain missing. The powerful quake, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, caused widespread destruction across central Myanmar and beyond.
Experts attribute the frequent seismic activity along the Sagaing Fault to its location at the boundary between the Indian Plate and the Burma microplate. The fault’s history includes several major earthquakes, such as the 1839 Ava earthquake, which caused extensive damage.
