Odisha: In the vibrant coastal town of Puri, Odisha, the Jagannath Rath Yatra begins today, June 27, 2025, transforming the streets into a sea of devotion. Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, adorned in resplendent attire, embark on their sacred journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. Massive wooden chariots, intricately decorated, are pulled by thousands of devotees chanting hymns, their fervor echoing through the Bada Danda.
The air hums with cymbals, drums, and the rhythmic Pahandi procession, as the deities sway gracefully to their chariots. The Gajapati Maharaja’s Chera Pahara ritual, sweeping the chariot platforms, symbolizes humility and equality. In Parlakhemundi, Odisha’s second most significant venue for the Rath Yatra, the celebration is equally spirited. The historic festival, initiated by the kings of Parlakhemundi, draws crowds to the local Jagannath temple. Three majestic chariots, mirroring Puri’s grandeur, carry the deities through vibrant streets, accompanied by traditional music and dance.
Devotees throng to pull the sacred ropes, believing it liberates the soul. The nine-day festival, steeped in mythology, unites communities in shared faith, culminating in the Bahuda Yatra, as the deities return, spreading divine blessings. The seaside pilgrim town has been transformed into a fortress as the festival is expected to have a footfall of around 15 lakh devotees on the first two days. The Odisha government, in collaboration with central agencies, has rolled out an extensive five-tier security apparatus.
All out efforts are being made to ensure a safe, orderly, and spiritually fulfilling festival. The Police Department has deployed approximately 10,000 security personnel to manage the massive influx of devotees and maintain law and order during the festival.
