West Hyderabad’s cloudburst hits life

Hyderabad, June 12, 2025: A powerful cloudburst struck West Hyderabad, including the University of Hyderabad, on Wednesday evening, dumping up to 148.5 mm of rain in just one hour, according to local weather reports. The deluge caused widespread flooding, disrupting life across the city and severely impacting the university campus.

At the University of Hyderabad, students and staff were stranded as roads turned into rivers and low-lying areas were submerged. “It was chaos; the water rose so fast,” said Priya Sharma, a second-year student. Classes were halted, and hostels faced power outages, with authorities scrambling to ensure safety. Social media buzzed with unverified claims of 50 cm of rain, but official sources, including the Telangana State Development Planning Society, confirmed rainfall between 114.8 mm and 148.5 mm in the area.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of more showers, citing an active monsoon trough. Hyderabad’s annual rainfall averages 82 cm, making this event a significant anomaly. Local officials urged residents to avoid travel and stay updated via IMD alerts. Emergency teams are working to clear drainage systems and restore normalcy, with the university assessing damage to infrastructure.
