Krishna Roars Back with First May Flood in 18 Years

Hyderabad: After nearly two decades of parched summers and dwindling water reserves, the Krishna River is witnessing a historic resurgence, with heavy inflows signaling the first major flood since 2007. This deluge, driven by relentless monsoon rains in the upper catchment areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka, is set to replenish reservoirs and bring much-needed relief to the Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Jurala Project: A Surge of Hope

The Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Jogulamba-Gadwal district, Telangana, has become the frontline recipient of this massive influx. According to irrigation officials, Jurala recorded inflows of approximately 87000 cusecs as of 6 PM on May 29, 2025, a significant jump from the 65,000 cusecs reported five hours before. The project’s reservoir, with a full capacity of 9.6 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet), is nearing its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 1,045 feet, currently standing at 1,043.8 feet with a storage of 8.9 TMC.

To manage the surging inflows, authorities have lifted 15 crest gates, releasing around 100,000 cusecs downstream toward the Srisailam reservoir.
