Kancha Gachibowli tree felling; Supreme Court reprimands Telangana government

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court has strongly reprimanded the Telangana government for extensive tree felling in Hyderabad’s Kancha Gachibowli area, warning officials of strict action for unauthorized deforestation. The court has directed the state to submit a concrete restoration plan and outline measures for wildlife protection.

A Bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and A.G. Masih heard the suo motu case regarding environmental violations. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 15, granting Telangana four weeks to respond to the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) report. Additionally, the state’s wildlife warden has been instructed to explain steps taken to safeguard displaced animals.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Telangana, informed the court that all development activities in the area had been halted. However, Justice Gavai questioned whether proper permissions had been obtained from forest authorities. Singhvi claimed that most tree felling had approvals, but Senior Advocate Parmeswar countered, stating that the government had unilaterally exempted certain species through self-certification.

Expressing concern over videos showing wildlife fleeing for shelter, Justice Gavai criticized the urgency with which bulldozers cleared 100 acres of forest during holidays. The court emphasized that environmental laws must be strictly followed, warning officials of serious consequences if violations continue.
