New Delhi: The Supreme Court has intervened decisively to address deforestation activities in the Kancha Gachibowli Forest, adjacent to the University of Hyderabad (HCU). Taking suo motu cognizance of the situation based on a mentioning made by Mr. K. Parameshwar, Amicus Curiae, the Court obtained an interim inspection report from Registrar (Judicial) of the Telangana High Court by deputing him to the site.
The Registrar’s report paints a grim picture, revealing extensive destruction of shrubs, bushes, and trees of varying sizes. The deforested area is reported to be home to wildlife, including peacocks, deer, and various bird species. A lake beside the cleared region further highlighted the ecological importance of the area.
The Supreme Court has taken serious note of this alarming situation and converted the matter into a suo motu writ petition titled In Re: Kancha Gachibowli Forest, State of Telangana. The Court has directed the Chief Secretary of Telangana to respond to several critical questions, including the rationale for initiating developmental activities without completing mandated assessments under the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Rules, 2023.
The Court further instructed the Central Empowered Committee to visit the site and submit a detailed report by April 16, 2025. Meanwhile, it has ordered an immediate halt to all activities in the area, except for measures to protect existing trees. Any failure to comply with the Court’s directions will result in personal accountability for the Chief Secretary of Telangana.
This judicial intervention underscores the urgent need for environmental preservation amidst developmental pressures. Conservationists and legal experts alike are closely monitoring the case, which could set a precedent for balancing ecological concerns with developmental goals.
Deforestation and Wildlife Impact: Nearly 100 acres of the Kancha Gachibowli Forest have been destroyed, with extensive tree felling and habitat disruption affecting wildlife, including peacocks, deer, and various birds. A lake near the area further underscores its ecological significance.
