Telangana Anticipates a Surge in Heat wave

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad has predicted a sharp rise in maximum temperatures, estimating an increase of 2-3°C in the next three days. With the heat wave looming, Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health & Family Welfare, has issued critical guidelines for citizens to navigate the scorching conditions safely.

Protective Measures to Stay Safe

To combat the effects of the heat wave, residents are urged to prioritize hydration and wear appropriate clothing. Carry water when traveling and consume homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices. Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers into your diet for optimal hydration.

When venturing outdoors, wear thin, loose, light-colored cotton clothes. Keep your head covered using umbrellas, hats, caps, or traditional headgear. Avoid being barefoot under the sun and always opt for shoes or sandals.

Indoor Precautions

Stay indoors in well-ventilated and cool spaces whenever possible. During the day, keep windows and curtains closed on the sunny side of your house, but open them at night to let in cooler air. Limit outdoor activities to mornings or evenings and ensure proper ventilation while cooking.

Activities to Avoid

Residents are advised against exposure to the sun during peak hours between 12:00 noon and 3:00 PM. Strenuous activities during the afternoon, consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, and sugary or carbonated drinks should be avoided. Salty, oily, spicy, or stale food can exacerbate dehydration, making high-protein diets unadvisable during this period.

Recognizing Heat Wave Danger Signs

Stay vigilant for symptoms of heat-related illnesses, including nausea, vomiting, hot and dry skin, throbbing headaches, rapid heartbeat, and disorientation. Severe cases can lead to fainting, seizures, or coma, requiring immediate medical attention.
