Hyderabad: Telangana government is on a mission to transform Bapu Ghat into an international cultural landmark. Located at the confluence of the Isa and Musi rivers in Hyderabad, Bapu Ghat holds deep historical and cultural significance as one of the sites where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in 1948. The site has since been a symbol of peace and reverence, attracting visitors who wish to pay homage to the Father of the Nation. The Telangana government plans to enhance this sanctity by developing the area into an international center promoting Gandhian philosophy.
The proposed Gandhi Sarovar project includes the establishment of a Knowledge Hub, a Meditation Centre, a handloom promotion centre, landscaped ghats, public entertainment spaces, museums, and the Statue of Peace, which will be the tallest statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the world. This initiative is part of the broader Musi River rejuvenation project, which aims to beautify the river’s surroundings and foster a spirit of peace and brotherhood through Gandhian ideals. The state government has sought transfer of 222.27 acres of defence land for the development of Bapu Ghat, located at the confluence of the Isa and Musi rivers in Hyderabad. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy briefed the Union Minister for Defense, Rajnath Singh on the ambitious Gandhi Sarovar project, which aims to transform Bapu Ghat into a significant cultural and historical landmark.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the historical and cultural heritage of Bapu Ghat while promoting educational and cultural activities. The state has urged the Union Government to expedite the transfer of land to initiate the development works, highlighting the project’s potential to foster international awareness of Gandhian ideals and contribute to the city’s cultural and historical landscape
