A three-meter section of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project roof collapsed in an under-construction inlet tunnel near Nagar Kurnool District of Telangana leaving seven workers trapped in the debris. The roof collapse happened at the 14-kilometer mark on the left side of the tunnel, a stretch where work had just resumed four days ago after a long hiatus.
Around 50 workers were present in the tunnel at the time of the accident. Many workers managed to escape with minor injuries and were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment by the project’s site management team.
Irrigation Department officials swiftly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and gather further details regarding the collapse. It is believed that a sudden influx of water during routine excavation work involving a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) caused the roof to collapse. Rescue teams have managed to extract three injured workers. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed his shock over the incident.
