‘When shawl of 75 years draped on you’: RSS chief says, it’s time to make way

A seemingly philosophical reflection by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has ignited a fierce political debate across India. Speaking at the launch of Moropant Pingle—The Architect of Hindu Resurgence in Nagpur, Bhagwat quoted the late RSS ideologue’s belief: “When the shawl of 75 years is draped over you, it signifies a time to step aside and allow others to take the lead.”

While intended to honor Pingle’s humility and commitment to renewal, the timing of the remark has raised eyebrows. Both Bhagwat and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will turn 75 in September 2025—Bhagwat on the 11th and Modi on the 17th. Opposition leaders swiftly interpreted the comment as a subtle signal from the RSS, suggesting that senior leaders should make way for younger successors.
The RSS, a foundational force behind the BJP, clarified that Bhagwat’s statement was contextual and not a directive. Yet, speculation persists about whether the organization’s internal principles of discipline and succession should extend to political leadership.

Opposition parties have seized the moment, pointing to Modi’s own enforcement of the 75-year retirement rule in 2014, which sidelined veterans like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh quipped that Modi’s “homecoming” from his diplomatic tour was met with a reminder of his impending milestone.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi defended Modi, asserting that his leadership is guided by “vision and public mandate, not arbitrary age limits.” Analysts suggest the episode reflects deeper tensions within the BJP-RSS dynamic and India’s increasingly symbolic political discourse.
