Naidu’s First Year: Bold Promises, Mixed Outcomes- Can He Sustain the Momentum

N. Chandrababu Naidu’s coalition government in Andhra Pradesh, formed on June 12, 2024, has completed one year, marked by ambitious promises and mixed outcomes. Leading the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-Jana Sena-BJP alliance, Naidu secured a landslide victory with 164 assembly seats, reflecting public faith in his development-focused vision. His government’s performance, however, invites critical scrutiny.

Naidu’s administration prioritized welfare and infrastructure, launching the “Super Six” schemes, including free gas cylinders, enhanced pensions, and free bus travel for women. The “Zero Poverty-P4” initiative, aiming to eradicate poverty by 2029 through public-private partnerships, is innovative but criticized by the YSRCP opposition as a shift of state responsibility to private entities.

The revival of Amaravati as the capital, backed by central funding, and progress on the Polavaram project signal economic ambition, yet financial constraints inherited from the previous government pose challenges. The state’s 2025-26 budget preparation reflects a delicate balance between welfare and development, with Naidu seeking special central assistance.

On governance, Naidu’s “Swarnandhra-2047” vision emphasizes deep tech, green energy, and job creation, with Visakhapatnam positioned as a knowledge hub. However, critics highlight slow progress on job generation and industrial growth, with some social media posts alleging minimal tangible outcomes despite extensive meetings. The push for larger families to counter declining fertility rates has sparked debate, with questions about its feasibility and alignment with modern demographic trends.

While Naidu’s tech-driven reforms and clean energy initiatives align with global trends, the opposition accuses him of unfulfilled poll promises and over-reliance on central support. Public sentiment is polarized, with supporters praising pension hikes and infrastructure repairs, while detractors point to unmet expectations. Naidu’s government shows promise but has a long way to go to address economic hurdles and deliver measurable results to sustain its mandate.
