Medak Cathedral, 100 years of grandeur and glory, celebrates centenary

The historic Medak Cathedral, also known as Medak Church, stands as a testament to architectural grandeur and spiritual significance. As it celebrates its centenary today, the church continues to be a beacon of faith and community service in Telangana.

Historical Significance

Medak Cathedral, one of the largest churches in India, was consecrated on December 25, 1924. Built by Reverend Charles Walker Posnett of the British Wesleyan Methodists, the church was constructed during a time of famine. Reverend Posnett initiated a “food for work” program, providing employment to the local population and ensuring their sustenance through the construction of the church.

The cathedral is renowned for its Gothic Revival architecture, featuring a 175-foot spire, imported mosaic tiles, and stunning stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The church spans 100 feet in width and 200 feet in length, with a capacity to hold 5,000 people.

Centenary Celebrations

Today, Medak Cathedral is adorned with colorful lights and festive decorations as it hosts devotees from various parts of India. The centenary celebrations include cultural performances, special prayers, and reflections on the church’s lasting impact on the region.

Rs 35 crores for development of Catherdral

The centenary celebrations are graced by the presence of Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy. Vice President Dhankhar, who is also attending the Natural and Organic Farmers’ Summit in Medak, joined the Christmas celebrations at the cathedral. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who has a special affinity with the Medak Church, announced a grant of Rs 35 crore for its development and participated in the special prayers.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Reddy expressed his delight in celebrating the centenary of Medak Church and extended greetings to the Christian community. He highlighted the government’s commitment to the welfare of marginalized communities and the development of Medak district.

Medak Cathedral continues to play a vital role in the community, conducting regular religious services and hosting cultural events that attract thousands of visitors each year. The Diocese of Medak oversees numerous churches and missions, contributing to social service, education, and healthcare in the region.
