Hyderabad: The Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Telangana is grappling with heavy inflows, reaching 1.06 lakh cusecs on Friday, driven by torrential rains in the Krishna River’s catchment areas across Karnataka and Maharashtra. Irrigation officials report that inflows are expected to rise further as upstream reservoirs, Almatti and Narayanpur, receive average inflows of 1.15 lakh and 70,000 cusecs, respectively.
To manage the deluge, Jurala authorities have opened spillway gates to maintain a safe flood cushion, releasing significant volumes downstream to the Srisailam reservoir. Srisailam, the primary beneficiary of Jurala’s outflow, has been receiving 9 to 10 TMC of floodwater recently, boosting its storage. However, the sudden surge poses challenges to ongoing maintenance work at Srisailam, critical for its structural integrity and operational efficiency. “We are closely monitoring the inflows and adjusting outflows to balance flood management and repair schedules,” said irrigation officials.
