Indian Students on Edge as U.S. Tightens Visa Policies

Hyderabad: A growing number of Indian students are facing unexpected visa revocations by U.S. authorities, raising concerns about the future of international education and immigration policies. Since Donald Trump took office in 2017, the U.S. government intensified visa scrutiny, leading to the cancellation of over 1,200 student visas, with Indian students making up nearly 50% of these revocations.
Many students have reported being forced to abandon their studies and return home abruptly, often without clear explanations.

While U.S. officials cite security concerns and procedural violations, students argue that many cancellations appear arbitrary, disrupting their education and career aspirations.Several cases have even been challenged in U.S. courts, as affected students seek transparency in the revocation process. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has acknowledged the issue, stating that Indian missions in the U.S. are actively assisting students facing visa troubles. Political leaders in India have urged the government to engage diplomatically to address these challenges.

One controversial aspect of the revocations is the suspected use of artificial intelligence (AI) in processing visa cancellations. Critics argue that reliance on automated algorithms may be flagging students unfairly based on minor infractions, leading to unjust deportations and a growing sense of uncertainty among Indian aspirants.

As diplomatic efforts continue, students remain anxious about their prospects, fearing long-term consequences for their ability to study in the U.S. The situation underscores the urgent need for clear policies and transparent procedures in handling international student visas.
