New Delhi: The Indian government is actively preparing contingency plans to evacuate its citizens from Iran as the country grapples with widespread anti-government protests and the looming threat of US military intervention. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that it is facilitating the return of Indian nationals who wish to leave Iran due to the rapidly deteriorating security situation.
Official sources revealed that options include using both commercial civil flights and military transport aircraft if necessary. This follows a strong advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran on Wednesday, urging all Indian nationals—including students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists—to depart the country immediately by any available means of transport.
The embassy also advised avoiding areas of protests, exercising extreme caution, staying in contact with the mission, and keeping travel documents ready.Estimates indicate that over 10,000 Indians, many of them students studying in cities like Tehran, Isfahan, and Qom, currently reside in Iran. The unrest in Iran, which began late last year over economic grievances like inflation and currency collapse, has escalated into nationwide demonstrations.
Reports suggest a brutal crackdown by security forces has resulted in over 2,500 deaths, with some estimates higher. US President Donald Trump has not ruled out military action against Tehran in response to the violence, heightening regional tensions and prompting airspace disruptions.India’s proactive measures prioritize the safety of its citizens amid the volatile environment. The first evacuation flights are expected to begin soon, with authorities monitoring the situation closely. The MEA continues to urge Indians to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran until further notice.
