Hyderabad: The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad achieved a record-breaking passenger traffic of 2.4 million in October 2024, marking a 21.7% year-over-year (YoY) increase. This surge in traffic is attributed to a 22.7% YoY growth in domestic passenger traffic and a 16.3% YoY increase in international traffic.
The airport also recorded its highest-ever single-day passenger volume of approximately 87,000 on October 14. Another milestone was set on October 20, with the highest-ever single-day aircraft movements (ATMs), totaling 583.
Comparison with Other Metros
RGIA’s impressive growth places it among the top airports in India. In comparison, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) remains the busiest, handling 736.7 million passengers in the fiscal year 2023-24. Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) follows with 528.2 million passengers, while Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) ranks third with 375.3 million passengers.
Despite these numbers, RGIA’s consistent growth highlights its rising prominence as a key aviation hub. The airport’s strategic location, state-of-the-art facilities, and commitment to passenger satisfaction have contributed to its success. The 21.7% YoY increase in passenger traffic is a testament to RGIA’s ability to attract both domestic and international travelers.
Factors Contributing to RGIA’s Growth
Several factors have contributed to RGIA’s growth. The city’s robust IT and technology sector continues to attract professionals and businesses, leading to increased travel demand. Additionally, the airport’s focus on infrastructure development, such as the expansion of the Metro Rail network and the construction of new terminals, has enhanced its capacity and efficiency.
Future Prospects
With its consistent growth and strategic initiatives, RGIA is poised for continued success. The airport’s commitment to quality services and infrastructure development positions it as a premier travel hub in India. As Hyderabad continues to develop as a major economic and cultural center, RGIA’s role in facilitating connectivity and economic growth will only become more significant.
