Hyderabad: Tensions escalated in Pedda Dhanwada village, Rajoli Mandal of Jogulamba Gadwal district, as farmers vehemently protested the establishment of an ethanol factory, fearing the loss of their fertile lands and sole source of livelihood. The agitation, driven by deep-seated frustration and “heartburn” over potential environmental and economic damage, took a violent turn on Wednesday, prompting a strong response from authorities.
Hundreds of farmers gathered at the construction site, clashing with officials and police in a bid to halt the project. The situation spiraled out of control as angry protesters reportedly attacked construction officers, leading to chaos. Police intervened to restore order, but not before several farmers were rounded up and allegedly thrashed during the crackdown.
Officials have booked cases against 12 farmers, charging them with illegal actions and taking the law into their own hands. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mogulayya condemned the violence, stating, “The law will deal with anyone who crosses the Lakshman Rekha. No one is exempt from legal boundaries.”
Farmers expressed outrage, alleging inadequate public hearings and a lack of consultation before the factory’s approval. They fear the plant, proposed by Gayatri Ethanol Company, will pollute air and water, rendering their agricultural lands barren and threatening their only source of income.
