Cooking Too Now Costly, LPG Prices Rise

Hyderabad: The Central government has announced a big hike in LPG cylinder prices, effective from April 8, 2025, sparking concerns among millions of households already grappling with rising living costs.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has made an announcement to this effect, confirming that the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder will increase by Rs 50. This change will impact both subsidized Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries and regular consumers.

The revised rates mean that a domestic LPG cylinder, currently priced at Rs 803, will cost RS 853 starting Tuesday. Even Ujjwala Yojana users, who receive government subsidies, will now pay Rs 550 instead of Rs 500. This price adjustment is expected to affect over 30 crore households, particularly those in rural and urban lower-income groups.

The hike comes amidst a backdrop of inflation and escalating energy costs, which have already strained household budgets. While commercial LPG cylinder prices were recently reduced, the increase in domestic LPG rates has drawn criticism for directly impacting common people. The government has cited rising global energy prices and the need to balance subsidies as key factors behind the decision.

This development is likely to intensify the financial burden on households and small businesses, especially those that rely on multiple cylinders each month. The timing of the hike, amid ongoing economic challenges, has further fueled public discontent.
