In a tense and tragic incident in Idukki, Kerala, forest officials were compelled to shoot an injured tiger in self-defense during a tranquilization operation. The tiger, which had been terrorizing local communities and killing domestic animals, became aggressive after being darted. It charged at the rescue team, damaging their protective gear, including a shield and a helmet, leaving them with no choice but to act to protect themselves.
The tiger had been on the run for several weeks, evading capture despite the forest department’s efforts involving drones, sniffer dogs, and bait. Its movements near tea plantations and residential areas had caused fear among local residents. Reportedly weak and injured, the tiger had continued to pose a significant threat to public safety.
Officials initially intended to tranquilize and relocate the animal. However, after being hit with the second tranquilizer dart, the tiger lunged at the team, forcing them to respond immediately. The tiger succumbed to gunshot wounds shortly after the incident.
