Modi to Attend G7 Summit, Signals a New Chapter in India-Canada Relations

New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada, following an invitation from newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The summit, scheduled to take place in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17, marks a potential thaw in relations between the two nations after years of strained ties.

Modi expressed his gratitude for the invitation in a post on X, stating, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

India’s relations with Canada had deteriorated under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, particularly over allegations regarding the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, Carney’s leadership and Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit signal a fresh opportunity for diplomatic engagement and cooperation.

The G7 Summit, comprising the world’s leading economies, will provide a platform for India to engage with global leaders on pressing international issues, reinforcing its role in global governance.
