Agro-Terrorism, new threat to Global Agriculture

Washington DC: Agro-Terrorism, the deliberate use of biological, chemical, or radiological agents to harm crops, livestock, or the food supply, is emerging as a critical threat to global economies and food security. This malicious tactic aims to disrupt agricultural systems, generate fear, cause massive economic losses, and destabilize societies, particularly in nations reliant on farming.

Recent concerns intensified after two Chinese nationals were charged in the U.S. for smuggling Fusarium graminearum, a toxic fungus classified as a potential agro-terrorism weapon. This pathogen devastates crops like wheat, barley, maize, and rice, leading to billions in losses annually and health risks like vomiting and liver damage if ingested. The incident underscores the vulnerability of food systems, with minimal detection risks and no international legal framework for biological attacks on non-human targets.

Experts warn that agro-terrorism’s appeal lies in its low cost and ease of execution—pathogens are often accessible in nature, and attacks can mimic natural outbreaks. Historical cases, like Germany’s use of Colorado potato beetles against Britain in WWII, highlight its precedent. In response, agencies like the USDA and DHS are bolstering surveillance, rapid response systems, and interagency coordination to safeguard agriculture. The stakes are high—disrupting food chains could cripple economies and spark panic.
