Karregutta Hills, Chhattisgarh-Telangana Border – A large-scale anti-Naxal operation, Operation Sankalp, continues in the dense forests of Karregutta, marking one of the most significant counter-insurgency efforts in recent years. Security forces, comprising over 24,000 personnel, have been engaged in intense combat with Maoist insurgents since April 22, 2025.
Conflicting Reports on Casualties
Recent clashes have resulted in multiple Maoist casualties, though the exact numbers remain disputed. Some reports claim 22 Maoists were killed in Tuesday’s encounter, while other sources confirm at least 15 fatalities. Earlier engagements in the same region led to the deaths of three female Naxalites on April 24 and one female Maoist on May 6. Additionally, a report from April 26 suggested 28 Maoists were killed, but this figure lacks consistent verification.
Strategic Gains and Challenges
Security forces have reclaimed key ridges in the Karregutta hills, hoisting the tricolor atop strategic locations to signal progress in the operation. The offensive aims to dismantle Maoist strongholds, particularly targeting Battalion No. 1 of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and its leader Madavi Hidma.
However, the operation faces significant challenges due to extreme heat and rugged terrain, with over 21 soldiers suffering from dehydration and sunstroke. The difficult conditions have slowed troop movements, but officials remain committed to securing the region.
Weapons Seized and Ongoing Operations
Security forces have recovered a .303 rifle and other weapons from the insurgents. The operation is expected to continue in the coming days, with aerial surveillance and ground forces working to eliminate remaining Maoist hideouts.
Authorities urge caution when interpreting casualty figures, as initial reports on social media may be exaggerated or unverified. Official updates from security agencies will provide more clarity as the operation progresses.
