Bengaluru: A tragic incident marred the annual Madduramma Temple festival in Huskuru, Anekal taluk, as a towering 100-foot chariot collapsed during the Rathotsava (chariot procession), leaving one person dead and three others injured. The mishap occurred amidst heavy rain and strong winds, which caused the massive structure to lose balance and topple.
The deceased has been identified as Lohit, a 26-year-old resident of Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Among the injured is a 16-year-old girl, whose condition remains critical, while two others are undergoing treatment for their injuries. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as devotees scrambled to safety when the chariot began to sway dangerously.
The chariot, an integral part of the centuries-old festival, was being pulled by devotees as part of the religious tradition. Organizers have faced criticism for alleged negligence in ensuring safety measures during the procession. Police have registered a case of death due to negligence and are investigating the incident.
