Hyderabad’s Vital Drinking Water Source Under 7×24-Surveillance of Drones

HYDERABAD: As part of the special measures initiated to monitor the Akkampalli reservoir, a key source supporting the drinking water supply to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as the Nalgonda district, drones have been deployed.

The decision comes in the wake of fears triggered by the dumping of dead chickens, raising concerns about avian flu, which has severely impacted the poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana.

The incident at the Akkampalli balancing reservoir in Nalgonda district, has caused widespread alarm, given the reservoir’s crucial role in supplying drinking water to the region. In response, Nalgonda District Collector Ila Tripathi and her team visited the reservoir on Saturday as part of a stock taking exercise. The Collector emphasized that a multi-disciplinary team has been formed, consisting of representatives from all departments.

Water samples have been sent to laboratories for analysis. Preliminary findings indicate that the chickens were discarded in a canal located nine kilometers away from the reservoir.
She said the water from the reservoir undergoes a three-stage filtration process before distribution.

Additionally, water samples are being continuously tested to ensure quality and safety. A farmer was already arrested for dumping the infected chickens in water. Police presence has been stepped up in the area.
