Muan, South Korea, December 29, 2024 – A devastating plane crash at Muan International Airport has claimed the lives of at least 179 people. The Jeju Air flight, a Boeing 737-800, was carrying 181 passengers and crew on a journey from Bangkok to Muan when it veered off the runway and burst into flames.
Details of the Crash
The crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time as the plane was attempting to land. Initial reports suggest that a bird strike, combined with adverse weather conditions, may have caused a malfunction in the aircraft’s landing gear. The plane skidded off the runway, collided with a concrete barrier, and erupted into flames.
Rescue Efforts
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate and assist survivors. So far, 33 bodies have been recovered, and two individuals—a passenger and a crew member—have been pulled alive from the wreckage. The National Fire Agency has deployed a robust emergency response, including fire trucks and helicopters, to extinguish the blaze and aid in rescue efforts.
Response from Authorities
South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok has ordered an all-out rescue operation and mobilized resources to address the crisis. Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae expressed deep regret and offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, taking full responsibility for the incident.
This tragic event marks the deadliest aviation accident involving a South Korean airline since 1997 and the first fatal crash for Jeju Air.
